The flow-chart outlines the CAESIE process, which is comprised of;

  • engagement with potential partners;
  • developing an expression of interest; and
  • the establishment of a formal collaboration between partners.

As shown in the figure the primary purpose of CAESIE takes place in the initial stages by connecting SMEs and researchers. After these connections have been facilitated the partnerships may continue in their own right.

There are many different types of collaborations that may be developed between Australian and EU researchers and SMEs through CAESIE. Some of these include:

  1. Australian researchers provide technology solutions to EU SME's with Australian researchers developing or owning the pre-existing IP and generating a royalty or licensing stream. Funding would come from EU end either public or private money.
  2. EU researchers provide technology solutions to Australian SME's with EU researchers developing or owning the pre-existing IP and generating a royalty or licensing stream. Australian SMEs become a paid technology supplier for an EU SME to deliver on a specific component of the technology.
  3. EU SMEs become a paid technology supplier for an Australian SME to deliver on a specific component of the technology
  4. Australian researchers connect with European researchers on early-stage technology spin-offs and form a partnership.
